Kiri-Una Brito Meumann is a multidisciplinary artist, high fashion enthusiast and a massive Rihanna fangirl, who assembled and installed one of her pieces in A$AP Rocky's NYC apartment back in 2014, just casually.
Currently residing in Melbourne, Kiri's work is already making waves, and whilst she's focusing this year on finishing up University, we'll be patiently anticipating on what's to come from the multi talented young artist because for her, this is only just the beginning.
In the past, we know you were steering towards Fashion Design, how did that evolve into where you’re at today?
I used to think Fashion Design would be my creative outlet, I thought I would be good at it but spending a little bit of time in school doing a fashion design class I learnt I didn’t really want to do that at all. From then on I got way more interested in making art. But fashion is a huge part of my life still.
Would you be able to describe your artistic style?
I would say I like to explore lots of different themes and materials, I don't like being restricted to one thing, so my artistic style is ever evolving.
Do you find it difficult to stay true to yourself and your vision whilst still standing out from other artists?
Sometimes it's hard to separate the art I like to the art I make. I think the art I usually like is really different to the art I make. But I think staying true to myself is naturally going to stand out from others.
What would you say is one of the biggest highlights of your career so far?
Probably having people from all different places in the world appreciate my work, also that time A$AP Rocky asked for some of my work haha
We really admire your distinctive style, what would you say are your most treasured pieces?
I think My Rei Kawakubo x Louis Vuitton bag is everything. It's just so ridiculous that it's amazing. I often get people asking if I cut the holes in it myself.
So when it comes to sneakers, what’s your staple?
I know this is kinda basic but probably my Tan Raf Simons Stan Smiths, they just go with everything.
Adidas or Nike?
Can you tell us about what you’re working on at the moment?
At the moment I'm working on finishing University but also have some side projects going that I probably shouldn't talk about yet. I'll definitely let you know when I do.
And are there any artists out there that you’d really like to collaborate with?
Many, I'd love to work with Rihanna because I love her! But also collaborate with people in different fields to my own.
Do you find that the very envious locations you’ve been in recently like Brazil and New York, has an impact on the inspiration for your work?
Absolutely! There is nothing better than travel to find inspiration, I wish I could do it more often.
So where to next?!
I'll be going to Europe mid year for the Venice Biennale and Documenta, cant wait!
